The YPAR Academy

“Our mission is shaped by Dr. King’s definition of the beloved community as ‘a global vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth - a world where racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry, and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.’”

The Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) Academy is a program run by New Orleans-based non-profit organization, Beloved Community, that supports high school students to conduct research that benefits them and their communities. Youth researchers are compensated for their work with stipends and can become paid researchers during the school year to continue their involvement in projects striving to create “sustainable solutions for diversity, equity, and inclusion” that center “actionable love.”

Since 2022, YPAR Academy participants have engaged in topics such as political activism, community storytelling, health disparities, and the experiences of incarcerated people.

“Ultimately, we seek to cultivate joy amongst our diverse, intergenerational community of scholars in our collective pursuit of justice."

The Justice-oriented Youth (JoY) Education Lab is an intergenerational collective founded by Dr. Ayana Allen-Handy in the School of Education at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. It strives to make the research process more equitable by centering youth and community perspectives, inspiring joy, challenging systemic oppression, and engaging in culturally sustaining pedagogies.

Some initiatives that have emerged from the JoY Education Lab include the Black Girls STEAMing through Dance (BGSD) and the West Philadelphia Community Dialogue Project, which empower marginalized racial groups using community-based knowledge, resources, and solutions.
