Ceeb* Culture Crash Course (*Shame)
Episode Description
In this episode (recorded during Ramadan in 2021), Nima, Asha, and Hamdi explore the role of “shame culture” in their cultural and family experiences. They discuss the particularly gendered impact of “shame culture” for them as young Somali American women. They talk about the harmful effects of being surveilled by other community members as they navigate multiple cultural contexts, including the Somali community in Faribault, predominantly white universities, and American youth/dating culture. They express their frustration at the double standards they witness and experience in the different ways young men and women are treated in their families and community and the different expectations they face compared to their brothers.
